What Is Tiller? Positive, Neutral and Negative Tiller Explained

A quick visual guide to understanding bow tiller. The graphic is attached, and its text is included below for easier reading. WHAT IS TILLER? Tiller is the difference between the upper and lower string-to-limb measurements, taken at matching points near the fadeouts. It helps balance how the limbs work for your finger position and aiming method. READING THE DIAGRAM U = upper string-to-limb measurement. L = lower string-to-limb measurement. Tiller = U − L. The diagrams identify the upper limb, riser, lower limb and string. POSITIVE TILLER — U > L The upper gap is larger than the lower gap. Common starting point for split-finger and Olympic recurve. Often about 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4 inch) positive. NEUTRAL TILLER — U = L The upper and lower gaps are equal. Common starting point for three-under shooting. Tune from here for feel, sound and clean limb timing. NEGATIVE TILLER — U < L The lower gap is larger than the upper gap. Sometimes useful for three-under stringwalking or a fixed crawl, especially when the string hand sits well below the arrow. START WITH YOUR MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATION Final tiller depends on grip pressure, finger pressure, nocking point and setup. These are starting points, not one setting that fits every bow or archer.
